University of Auckland X-Band Rain Radar Page
The Atmospheric Physics group runs a number of mobile X-band rain radars. The radars can be deployed to regions of interest to provide high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of precipitation.
The Container Radar is mounted in a 10 foot sea container. The dish assembly can be removed allowing the radar to be shipped by standard commercial carriers. In 2004 the unit was deployed to the Snowy Mountains in Australia, on contract to Snowy Hydro Ltd. (photo below left, courtesy Andrew Peace).
The Trailer Radar (below right) is much more mobile, installed on a road legal trailer it is light enough to be towed by a 4WD ute. A time-lapse animation showing the setup of the trailer radar is available here.
