University of Auckland X-Band Rain Radar Page

The vertical distribution of precipitation is not uniform. The animation below shows PPI images with different scan angles (left to right 3.5, 4.75 and 6 deg) valid at about the same time over 2008/08/01. The radar is located at 0,0 (triangle). The rain features at long range the top of the image are resolved best by the lowest scan angle; however that image also has significant ground clutter closer to the radar. The ground clutter corresponds to the local terrain (gray contour lines). The town of Tokoroa is located at the confluence of roads at (1.5, 1.5).
