National radar

New Zealand is well served by an extensive network of advanced weather radar operated by NZ Metservice Ltd. Data from the National Weather Radar can be used in combination with rain-gauge measurements to estimate rainfall accumulations over large areas. This data has many potential applications, for example to help answer questions about how a stormwater or sewer network responds to spatially variable rainfall input or water storage budgets.

We can prepare rainfall accumulation maps from National Radar data for engineering and catchment management applications, for example:

  • calibrated, 1 or 5-minute input data for sewer or stormwater modelling projects

  • post event analysis following flooding

Radar data reveals the spatial structure of rainfall between rain-gauge locations.
